Span 309
MLO Reflective Narrative:
The secondary culture course I took, Spanish 309, was a very different way of examining culture, especially one that is very closely tied to my own culture. The Spanish course that I took examined Latin American history from before Columbus up to contemporary times. Though it was primarily a history course we also examined the ways that social justice issues are impacted because of the culture and history of this region. Through examining an entire region so close to my own country I was able to better understand how my own country's actions can negatively or positively impact the countries around us. I was also able to learn about the issues that people so close to my country are facing and how colonization and further suppression has created an environment that is incredibly negative for many who are involved. We examined the ways that art, especially paintings, can be used to demonstrate the negative effects that colonization has had on peoples and the ways that this alters the kinds of art created. Being able to learn about Latin America and compare its history to that of the U.S. as well as to that of Japan allowed for me to better understand how differing histories impact culture. This course also showed in detail the ways that Japanese culture is different from Latin American culture because of the differing histories and their relationships to other countries in the world.
