MLO Reflective Narrative:
Japanese culture courses are one of my favorite parts of the Japanese language and culture major. I enjoy being able to better understand how Japanese culture is impacted by history as well as the ways that values change as the country changes. Two of the courses that I found most helpful in meeting MLO 2 were Japanese 402 and Japanese 311. Japanese 402 was a literature class that I took that helped me develop the skills to use Japanese literature to see what the population was struggling with as well as what they valued. This course helped me meet MLO 2.1. Many of the stories we read discussed the differences between generations and the struggles that they faced by trying to communicate their own ideas with the different generations. Older generations in these stories allowed for me to understand what used to be the values of Japanese society as well as what issues they see with current generations values. Through this comparison I grew a deeper understanding of how Japanese society has been able to keep both older traditions while also developing new ones. The course also allowed for me to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of Japanese literature and its unique characteristics. Japanese 311 allowed for me to look at contemporary Japan and examine the societal issues that they face. This course allowed for me to meet MLO 2.2. Many times when learning about foreign languages and cultures the negative aspects are ignored or only glossed over. This course allowed for me to develop a more critical understanding of Japanese society as well as my own. Through examining societal issues that all cultures face, my own cultures problems were also highlighted and I began to consider why both countries have the same issues despite different cultures and histories. This course also allowed me to understand the historical and cultural factors that have created many of these social issues and the struggles that exist around trying to overcome them. These courses were extremely helpful in allowing for me to understand why certain cultural activities exist as well as what contemporary Japanese society social issues are.
