Japn 402: Japanese Literature
Course description:
This course aims to develop an advanced level of communication by interpreting and analyzing various aspects of modern Japanese literature, including short stories and significant works by authors of the modern period. Taught in Japanese.
MLO's:
This course meets MLO 1 as well as MLO 2.
Course Narrative:
Through this course I was able to examine trends in Japanese literature. I was able to identify the ways that Japanese literature can explore the changing society that Japan encountered from the end of World War I through to the Triple disaster in Fukushima. These trends allowed for a better understanding of how Japanese people saw the changes that were occurring. A particularly interesting trend was the ways that Japanese authors wrote about natural disasters and how these writings changed depending on the disaster and its view in society. One of the ways that we were able to connect the themes of changing ideals and situations in Japanese literature was through our final essay. This essay allowed for us to compare several of the stories and poems that we read and draw connections to their time and place in Japanese history.
